Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are!
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.

When the blazing sun is gone,
When he nothing shines upon,
Then you show your little light,
Twinkle, twinkle, through the night.

Then the traveller in the dark
Thanks you for your tiny spark;
He could not see where to go,
If you did not twinkle so.

About This Rhyme

Written by Jane Taylor in 1806, published in Rhymes for the Nursery. The melody is borrowed from the French folk tune "Ah! vous dirai-je, maman" (1761), which Mozart also used for his famous variations. Most people only know the first verse, but the full poem has five stanzas.
